Your child has gotten back their exam and test results and they did not fit your expectations. Are you going to scold them or nag at them?
Although this is what most parents are doing, it is not the best way to make them improve. In addition, your child already feels miserable about their results, so they would not want another round of nagging or scolding to make them worse.
Instead of reprimanding them, here are some steps on how to respond to your child’s results and work together to improve them.
Start off with what they did well
Praise your child not only on their AL1’s or A’s but also on getting better results in subjects they initially have difficulty with.
Ask them which subject they are proudest of and why.
You can ask your child “What went right?” for a good grade to see how that achievement can translate to more difficult areas.
Find out the reason for their poor performance
When talking about poorly performed subjects, do not blame them for their results. Instead, ask them if the work was too difficult or the teacher went too fast.
If they say they were bored or did not like the subject, find out why and ask them to explain their dislikes and try to address them.
For example, if your child finds Math boring and not applicable to real life, or if they get easily bored when they revise Math, you can show them how math is used in subjects they love, from shopping to educational games.
Are they having homework struggles?
Is your child getting enough time to complete their homework? Or are their CCAs taking up too much of their after-school time?
Were they distracted from completing work at home?
If your answer is yes, you can talk to them about why they are having trouble focusing and completing their homework and revision.
If your child’s CCA is not compulsory, you may want to consider your child dropping their CCA so that they can better focus on their studies. If it is compulsory or if they would like to continue, you can find ways to make their homework & revision more productive at home
If you are unsure about your child’s performance and struggles, you can speak to their teacher to find out more about your child’s performance in school.
This can give you a clearer idea of planning your child’s revision.
We hope these tips can help you better understand your child’s school progress and make them less frustrated about their results!
